Targeted Hepatitis C and some B Screening through various partnerships with CBO's throughout Houston

            Original goal for 2008: Change the percent positive

  • 1500 screenings in 2007 vs. 2008 targeted screening numbers of over 1200
    (2.7% positive in 2007 and a 36.5% positive in 2008)
  • Partnership with Planned Parenthood
  • HOPE Clinic potential screening program (met to discuss with them in May - working on meeting with hepatologists)
  • Greater Houston Injury Center - outreach into Asian community

  • Hepatitis C Patient Treatment Training Class - This class is free of charge and offered to any patient, nurse or family member who would like to attend.   • April 14th - Community Health Fair - Raise awareness and educate about hepatitis C, provide free hepatitis C screening

  • April 26th - City of Houston Employee Health Fair - Raise awareness and educate about hepatitis C, provide free hepatitis C screenings

  • May 9 and May 15, 2007 - Corrections Officers screening in two different facilities - approximately 50 people screened

  • May 10, 2007 - Hepatitis C/HIV Co-Infection talk for patients - Thomas Street Clinic, taught by Herman Ortiz, LVN

2005

  • Sixth Annual International Hot Topics in Liver Disease Conference

    • Over 50 physicians and over 75 nurses trained in all aspects of liver disease

  • Certified Train the Trainers for HCV Advocates - hcvadvocates.org (on-going)

    • Completed two Train the Trainer events in Houston and Dallas. Trained about 40 people in each location.

    • Began leading own Train the Trainer events beginning August 5, 2005. At that event we had 48 drug and alcohol counselors, social workers, nurses and prison workers attend an all day session to learn about Hepatitis C.

    • Out of this came a statewide event that Dave will teach at ? reaching three breakout sessions of 100 healthcare workers each.

  • 29 Support groups maintained throughout the state of Texas (on-going)

  • Hepatitis C radio show co-host - third Tuesday of every month Education Director co-hosts a radio program on hepatitis C. He brings hepatologists on the radio as guests and they discuss various topics and open up the lines for questions from listeners. (on-going)

  • Participation in the Harris County Hepatitis C Task Force and the state Hepatitis C Work Group.

    • Two 30 minute presentations in Austin to the Texas State Work Group on Hep C to explain the Texas Liver Coalition and its mission. We had the opportunity to click through the website on a huge screen, the presentation was well received by the (largely professional) group.

  • Sponsored Dr. Nguyen's Tet Festival efforts to test and educate the Vietnamese Community on Hep B and C with a $6,000 grant. He screened 125 people and tested 61, resulting in 25% having antibodies to viral hepatitis.

  • Hepatitis C Screening Program

    • Community lecture and HCV screening with guest lecturer Dr. Sussman. July 15, 2005 - 104 attendees, 74 screened, 25 HCV positive.

    • Community lecture and HCV screening with guest lecturer Dr. Glombicki. November 5, 2005 - 64 attendees, 15 HCV positive.

    • Blues in C: Hepatitis C Awareness Blues Festival and Free Screening - December 4, 2005 - 248 attendees, 63 screened, 12 HCV positive.

    • January we will have a Hepatitis C event in the Latino community

    • January two Hepatitis B events scheduled for two different Asian communities

  • On-going lectures to nurses and alcohol and drug abuse counselors throughout St. Luke's and the greater Harris County area, facilitated by our Community Laison who spends over 60 hours per month advocating hepatitis C awareness in this community

    • CNE lecture to 30 nurses 8/18/05

    • CNE lecture to SLEH nurses 8/22/05

    • General hepatitis C lecture to participants in Bay Area Recovery Center - 100 male residents, we spoke to about 70. Three that we know of are lined up for Hep C Treatment, subsequent to the talk - 8/25

    • CNE lecture to Hispanic Nurse Association and some VA nurses 7/05

    • Three lectures scheduled to target Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors specifically, educating them about hepatitis C
